Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and the nature of the sport

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a dynamic martial art that focuses on grappling and involves controlled physical contact. While our classes are designed to be safe and carefully supervised, BJJ is a combat sport and carries some risk. If an injury occurs, most are minor, such as a bruise, scrape, or small cut. On very rare occasions, joint or muscle strains may occur. Serious injuries are extremely uncommon, but as with any sport, they are possible.

By agreeing with this section I understand and confirm that:

  • My and/or my child’s participation is voluntary, and I accept possible risks of training in BJJ.
  • BJJ Studio is not liable for damages or injuries, except in cases of intent or gross negligence.
  • In case of an emergency, BJJ Studio may arrange medical care on my and/or my child’s behalf, and I accept responsibility for related costs.
  • I may be photographed or filmed for promotional purposes, unless I opt out.
A copy of the submitted information will be sent after successful completion of the form.

First Class Preparations

What to Bring

  • Don’t worry about a GI. We have loaners for beginners. Wear a tight athletic t-shirt or compression shorts/leggings. It prevents extra protection and keeps things modest when the uniform inevitably shifts.
  • Large Water Bottle: You will sweat more than you think.
  • Mouthguard: Optional for your first day, but mandatory once you start live drilling.
  • Flip-flops: Wear them anytime you step off the mat to keep the mats clean.

What to Expect

A 90 minute class usually follows this flow:

  • The Warm-up: Functional movements like shrimping to prepare your body.
  • Technique & Drilling: Watching a move, then practicing it with a partner.
  • Rolling: Live sparring, where beginners are paired with experienced students for safety.

The “Golden Rules”

  • Trim your nails: Long nails act like tiny daggers. Keep them short.
  • Hygiene is King: Ensure your body and clothes are clean.
  • Check the Ego: Tap early and tap often to stay safe.
  • Remove Jewelry: Avoid injuring yourself or your partner.
