Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about starting your journey? Find everything you need to know about our classes, gear, and membership process.

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)?

  • BJJ is a martial art that focuses on grappling, ground control, and submissions using leverage and technique instead of strength.

Is BJJ safe?

  • Yes. Our classes are carefully supervised by experienced instructors who prioritize student safety above all else.
  • We foster a controlled environment where students are taught to respect their partners and “tap early” to avoid injury.

Is there an age limit to start?

  • Absolutely not. We have members starting in their 40s and 50s. Jiu-Jitsu is “the gentle art,” and our instructors will help you pace your training to match your personal goals and physical needs.

Do I have to compete?

  • Only if you want to. While we have a competitive team, the vast majority of our members train for personal development, fitness, self-defense, and fun.

What if I have a pre-existing injury?

  • Please discuss this with the instructor before class so they can suggest modifications and give advice. Your longevity on the mats is our priority.

Do I need to be fit or flexible to start?

  • No. Anyone can begin training regardless of age, size, or athletic background. You get fit by training, you don’t need to be fit to train.

I am new to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

  • No experience? No worries. Most of our members started as complete beginners. Our fundamentals classes are designed specifically for you.
  • What to wear? We have GIs that can be borrowed for your trial class. For No-Gi, tight-fitting athletic wear is perfect.

What should I bring to the gym?

  • The Essentials: Comfortable sports clothes (rash guard or t-shirt), flip flops (mandatory for off-mat areas), and a large water bottle.
  • Loaner Gis: Don’t have a Gi yet? We provide loaner Gis for your first sessions. Please contact us in advance so we can prepare the right size for you.
  • Safety Gear: A mouthguard is highly recommended for all sessions.

How to prepare for a class?

  • Maintain good hygiene with clean hands and feet, trimmed fingernails, and tie back long hair.
  • Remove all jewelry & sharp objects. Securely tape any items that cannot be removed if necessary.
  • Please arrive 15 minutes early to say hello sign in and get changed.

What is a Family Account?

  • With a Family Account, you can manage multiple family members from one account and one payment method, while every member keeps their own profile, attendance, bookings, and belt progression. And yes, parents can train too. Activate the Family Account in your BJJ Studio Account and add your family members. You can also switch the primary account holder between linked family members.

Do I need an Falily Account?

  • No. Family Accounts are optional but recommended for multiple members of the same family. They allow you to manage family members together, use one payment method, and give the primary member access to manage the family. Separate accounts are also possible, but each member is managed independently.

What happens after I submit my Membership Application?

  • Your request enters our “Under Review” queue. Our staff verifies your details to ensure we can accommodate your membership type at this time.

Will my membership application be confirmed immediately?

  • No. Every membership application is carefully reviewed by our team to ensure we can provide the best possible training environment for all members. You will receive a notification of our decision within 2 working days.

Can my application be declined?

  • Yes. We reserve the right to decline applications based on class capacity, safety requirements, or other operational criteria. If declined, you will be notified via email with further details.

I am so curious now, how do I start?

  • Simply head over to our Trial Class Page to pick a date that works for you. We can’t wait to see you on the mats!
